Dog Showing

Our Beloved Saxon demonstrating a natural Show Stance

Have you thought about showing your Labrador Retriever? It is a hobby that is well worth pursuing if you have a good dog or bitch that is on the main Register and has a sound Pedigree, why not try!

You meet some nice people, some lovely dogs, and see some great scenery on the way. Most Kennel Clubs have classes for you to attend to teach you and your dog how to best present yourselves, it must always be remembered it is a team effort. All dogs have their days when they really don't want to show, would much rather be doing something else, but more often than not particularly a Labrador, they want to do their best and try so hard to please you.

It really is lovely when you win your first ribbon be it blue, red or green. It is rather special when you win your first Challenge Certificate, great when you win a Group and just Super when your dog becomes a Champion!

The bond between dog and handler grows with time and success, the dog of course understands the range of emotions that are circling a dog enclosure and Show Ring. I think it is most important to remember and in fact tell your dog that you are bringing and taking home "the best dog" and if by chance the judge of the day thinks the same, it is a bonus, if not well there is always another day, another Show, but remember you are the lucky one to still have "the best dog".

Over the years, I have heard some strange comments and actions of people to their dogs and other competitors. Some people find they cannot talk to anyone until after a Show and only then if they have Won! Others find it impossible to say or see anything good about other competitors dogs. There are always a few folks that are encouraging and that is always nice.
I must admit what I hate to see with some of the exhibitors is if their dog wins, they lavish the dog with praise and petting and the dog loves it. If the dog does not win however, quite a different response from the owner. the dog usually gets hurried back to their trailers and put in without much said. If only they would take the time to look at the expression on their dogs face, they are so disappointed and can't understand why they are made a fuss of one day and almost ignored on another. They have done the same thing, poor dogs it is not fair.

Like all other Hobbies and Sports, you will get out of it what you are prepared to put in.You need the time, a good dog or bitch, the ability to accept human nature at its best and worst,

. To win you need to have an inner desire to succeed and most importantly a sense of humour, so that come what may, you and your dog will always have an enjoyable day together, as your bond gets stronger.

The Breeder of your dog or bitch will always be happy to give you more advice.
