The highs and lows of being a modern Beatlemaniac

Okay okay... we all realise that there's a few quite major disadvantages of being a 'today' Beatlemaniac... But keep the faith! There's loads of positives, too! :)

1. You haven't lost your hearing going to one of their concerts, and screaming along with hundreds of others..

2. Rather than listening to records which can jump and be scratchy, you can just shove a CD in your Discman!

3. The Beatles Anthology was released in the nineties... at least we were around for that!! :)

4. Instead of waiting around for months for the next Beatles album or single, you can jump from 'Please Please Me' to 'Let It Be' whenever the mood takes you...

5. Parents are much more likely to buy you Beatles albums rather than any released by the top ten pop or alternative groups

6. You never ever get told to "Turn that darn music down!!!!"

7. When listening to your fave CD, you never get comments such as "That's not music, that's noise, in my day musicians could actually play blah blah blah..."

8. You actually get to study the Beatles and the Sixties if you are doing music or history at school!!

9. We can look back on the overall effect the Beatles had on the sixties

10. The Internet exists!! There's thousands of Beatle sites to check out... and it's easy to contact other Beatle fans!! You're not alone... :)

11. There's hundreds of books about the Beatles... way more than what was available in the sixties!!

12. Retro is in... being a sixties chick is actually pretty chic! (well sorta... ;))

13. Since Beatlemaniacs these days are quite rare, you're actually being very individual! (Which is good, right?!) Molly, 12, Winsconsin USA

15. You don't spend every other minute wishing you'd kept that bubblegum wrapper or Beatle Wig, because 'what would it be worth now'?

16. We haven't forgotten all the lyrics like the old folks have! (Have you ever watched a tribute band sing Drive My Car? All the old ones sing "Beep beep yeah!" in the first chorus, while the young ones smile smugly, knowing that it doesn't come in until the second chorus!!)

17. The sixties probably weren't as good as they were cracked up to be, if you weren't on drugs, in which case we have the advantage of not knowing the awful truth!

18. We didn't have to live through the 80s!!! (Well, at least we were too young to see how terrible they were!)

19. Not being alive at the same time as John only makes him more alluring. :) Thanks to Michelle for #15 - 19!

20. If we were vintage Beatlemaniacs, we wouldn't be hearing Beatles songs for the first time today! We might be sick to death of them! (shock, horror!)

21. Beatles movies and film clips are available on video to watch anytime! Vintage Beatlemaniacs had to wait nearly 20 years to see them for the second time! Diane, of The Idle Hands Beatles Page

22. You can exchange hugely funny inside jokes with other Beatle fans... that are made even funnier when other people are completely confused! //o-o\\ The Walrus

23. Although John's death is still very, very upsetting, at least we didn't know him when he was alive, or were around when it happened.  That would have make it harder to take. *sniff* Thanks Melissa!

24. Most old records are so cheap! You can enjoy the music of many artists of the 60's without breaking the bank (as long as your parents have hung on to their record player!)

25.We don't have to worry about language/content warning labels on Beatle albums like with some bands. Thanks Brian!

26. You never have to worry about how well the Beatles will age 'cause... they already have.

27. You're *so* much more likely to have your fan letters read by an actual Beatle! Ta Jess for #26-7!

28. You never had to live through the pain of their break-up! Ta Leslie!

29. You can get in the good books of teachers and other older people you have to spend time with by discussing the Beatles and other 60's groups. Thanks vbalplayr!

Okay, apart from the obvious.. we weren't around to experience it first time!.. there are a few disadvantages that the original lot of Beatlemaniacs didn't have to deal with!!

1. You get told, "Don't live in the past!! Live in the now!"

2. Looks of disbelief when your friends realise that you're listening to 'old stuff'like "Please Please Me"... and the masked polite response, "No, no, it's fine... really" when you offer to turn it off.

3. Hearing your favourite song on the 'Saturday Night Jukebox" program on the old folks' radio station.

4. Having your parents sing along to your Beatles tapes in the car... and realising that they know the words better than you do!

5. Not being able to stop yourself singing along to classics such as 'Lucy In Sky With Diamonds'.. even though you might be in the middle of a supermarket at the time.

6. Realising half-way through a conversation that you've been listing 'Paul Is Dead' clues for the past 15 minutes!

7. Not being able to afford Beatle memorbilia, because everything is a collectors item..

8. Snatches from everday conversations spark Beatles songs that stay in your head for days... (e.g. "I've got nothing to do!!" starts you singing "Good Morning Good Morning")

9. Not everyone loves your psychedelic sixties fashions as much as you do!

10. You have to deal with the fact that Paul, George and Ringo are actually old men!!!! and you weren't even on the planet at the same time as John!!!

11. Never being able to find enough photos of your favourite Beatle to add to the shrine in your room.

12. Hunting for 'Paul Is Dead' clues when you realise he's a lot closer to death now then he was back then..

13. Noone knows what you're talking about when you start using words like gear, fab, and 'clean' (because you've watched 'A Hard Day's Night' just tooooo many times!!)

14. Beatle CDs are so much more expensive than any modern band's! Ta Michelle!

15. A Hard Day's Night is out of print and impossible to get unless you buy on from eBay (which you can't do anyway because your parents are ultra-wary of modern technology, like e-commerce.)

16. Primitive techology, such as records, are trickier to handle than you think, and you end up scratching them or wrecking the covers!

17. There is really absolutely no way whatsoever that you could maybe have a chance with any of those adorable Beatle boys... especially John... :/ Thanks Melissa for #15 - 17!

18. Sorry to say, but one day you will own every Beatle track and there just will not be any more to look forward to... *sniff*... Thanks Brian!

20. At school dances it is very unlikely that they will play" Helter Skelter" or any other lesser known yet danceable Beatle song, or any Beatles song at all for that matter. And if they did it would be accompanied by something like "Here's an oldie but goodie!" Thanks vbalplayr!

21. Your friends tease you and say that you fancy old men, but you can't deny it!!! Ta Jess!
