Postal Stationery and Postal History Society of Australia Inc.
About the society

[Back to Main page]

The society was formed to cater for collectors who are interested in aspects of philately other than the study of postage stamps alone. Its members are interested in postal stationery, postal history and the exploration of the new areas associated with postal stationery and postal history including postmarks, airmails, military mail, cinderellas, literature etc.

For many years this material had been largely ignored by traditional stamp collectors and no forum existed in Australia which enabled the exchange of ideas and news or enabled collectors with similar interests to communicate their discoveries and/or questions on their postal stationery and postal history.

In 1975 a small group of collectors discussed the possibility of the formation of a national society in Australia to cater for collectors of postal stationery and postal history. The inaugural meeting took place in Adelaide, South Australia, early in 1976. The Society was incorporated in September of the same year.

The Society is an international organisation with its administration based in Adelaide and with members in all states of Australia and several overseas countries.

The Society produces its magazine “The Australian Posthorn” four times per year. This is a magazine for serious students of postal stationery and postal history. The Society’s aim is to assist collectors interested in these areas. This is reflected in the friendships established between individual members.

The Society is also a serious one with a number of members interested in the study of many aspects of postal history contributing to the knowledge which already exists. Members are therefore encouraged to contribute to the Society and philately generally by providing articles and information for publication in “The Australian Posthorn.” A large number of areas remain unresearched and many opportunities for original study exist.

At the time of writing regular meetings are held in Adelaide only, with metropolitan members paying a levy to defray expenses of the meeting venue.

At each meeting there are invited displays of Post Cards, Postal Stationery and/or Postal History plus an auction of members surplus material. A small commission is charged on this material to assist club funds.
